There was a period of time when I was getting phone calls, emails, and texts while I was in my office from my teenage children. The problem is, they’d send them to me when they were home, and my office is at home too! After a few episodes of this I stopped responding, except with the phrase, “Come and see me.” No longer do I get the in-house messages and phone calls. They know I won’t respond. Instead, I get the delightful pleasure of them showing up at my door for a visit. Our voice can be carried by a variety of technological means, or even just by projecting from one room to another. Yet our “voice” is greatly enhanced by our actual presence in front of the person we’re addressing. So today’s practice is to move your body in front of the person you wish to communicate with if they are within a two-minute walk of where you are. Shouting from one room to the other at home is also just a function of Staying Comfortable, and diminishes the quality of our connections. Try getting up today and speaking after you’ve seen the whites of their eyes. You’ll be exercising relationship and your legs at the same time.
