I’m talking about the elephant in the room. The one you may be protecting in the company of friends you value, family you love, or colleagues you share a mission with. The only way to deal with it is first to admit to yourself that the elephant is there and then have an honest conversation with those who have been equally committed to pretending they don’t see it. Just find a way to address it. Be skillful or just stumble forward. Vulnerability, honesty, and compassion are the rule, and don’t blame. Take a breath and speak. You’ll probably get mixed reactions. Some people will thank you. With others your popularity may temporarily suffer. That’s okay. Real human feeling in relationship to the truth is easier to handle than a rogue elephant.
