Today’s practice is to answer all non-life-altering questions immediately instead of pausing, hemming and hawing, debating, and “thinking about it.” There is a phrase — first-thought best-thought — which neatly summarizes the benefit of trusting ourselves in the moment and navigating our lives with the confidence of our instincts. I’m sure I don’t need to list the exceptions for all of you Intelligent Misbehavers. When something deserves to be thoughtfully considered I’m sure you will heed the commonsense that arises in the moment. Other than that, have fun being decisive and unapologetic about your lack of deliberation on each thing that comes along. You might make a bad call or two, but that’s better than stopping the game at every pitch to review the tapes from every angle. At least for today just play ball — call it the way you see it — and let the mistakes go.
